Are there any?

I'm looking for recommendations for a spiffy yet not exorbitant hotel in OKC, as well as local points of interest. We're taking a weekend ride out there to visit an ailing uncle. But I can't remember if we even have anyone in OKC?

Visitors tend to know how to look up Holiday Inns on hotels.com. Just sayin'.

Say, has that jet factory cranked up operations yet?

I heard you'd frequented a lot of $AREA hostelleries, but one doesn't like to give too much credit to scuttlebutt.

On t'other: diary ahoy!

Hate to tell you this but... by atreides (2.00 / 0) #8 Thu Feb 21, 2008 at 08:45:27 AM EST
...there is nothing redeeming about Oklahoma City.

When I was working at Tinker AFB, by greyrat (4.00 / 1) #10 Thu Feb 21, 2008 at 08:53:44 AM EST
we stayed on the corporate dime at a Hilton or Sheraton, or something like that just west of Bricktown. It was very nice. We ate and partied in Bricktown most nights. Because of Bricktown, staying downtown would be much more fun than staying out in the 'burbs.

It's also a short walk from the OK City bombing memorial, which is supposed to be very -- contemplative. When I was there, the building hand not been completely demolished yet and the memorial was just an artists rendering.

OKC sucks, but see the bombing memorial by theboz (4.00 / 1) #12 Thu Feb 21, 2008 at 09:49:17 AM EST
Really, the only thing worth doing is checking out the bombing memorial.  If you want to eat authentic regional food, go to Earl's near the corner of 10th street and Meridian, which has good chicken fried steak.  You could also try eating at Applewoods to get some of those great rolls they have.

Other than that, there really isn't much.  I moved from Atlanta to OKC and it was really sad.  OKC sucks horribly, and there really isn't much to do there.  Even their ripoff of the San Antonio riverwalk is lame and sanitized, with maybe one nightclub on it.  Your best bets for entertainment are going to be typical suburbia type stuff -- eating at chain restaurants on Lake Heffner, shopping, going to the movies, etc.  Plus the weather will suck with coldness, so there isn't much outside you'll be able to do right now.

We'll definitely make it a point to see the memorial... good thing it's a short trip, sounds like.

We'll just have to entertain ourselves in the evenings

There's the Wichita Mountains wildlife refuge by miker2 (4.00 / 1) #13 Thu Feb 21, 2008 at 11:15:25 AM EST
It's just north of Lawton, OK (right above Ft. Sill, so excuse the artillery fire).

Lots of really large animals there and some great scenery.
